V-Gates - Digital Binary Mode

about

Here's the 3rd of my demos of the V-Gates module from Synthetic Sound Systems.

DIGITAL BINARY

I'm not going to try to pretend I understand binary, so I'll just tell you what it says in the manual:

"Each high (positive) going external pulse, the outputs will change to
the next higher binary value. Once all the outputs are turned on
(Value: 255, or binary 11111111), the output automatically goes back
to zero (no outputs on).
Follow Input Width - As the INITIAL knob is increased, the lower
stages will progressively begin to follow the width of the clock pulse.
So, for instance, if the INITIAL knob is at about 3 ½ to 4, the lower 4
stages will flash on, then off, following the width of the external Clk
In pulse, and the upper stages will remain ON until the next clock
pulse. At full clockwise rotation, all outputs will follow the width of the clock.
The Reset input may be patched to one of the outputs to control the number of stages, or
to an external source to reset the count to zero. "

In layman's terms - and as I understand it - when the INTIAL knob is set to CCW the outputs are firing off divisions of the clock, according to the binary calculations (similar to the RCD, but different..). As you turn up the INITIAL knob, instead of the various outputs staying high for the duration of their "beat" they instead turn on and off in time with the clock (and following the clock's width). So...you get little bursts of rhythm from each output, instead of single "beats"

Patch details:

In this patch I have set up 6 different sounds (from the Cyclebox, E350, Piston Honda, and two z3000s). Some are going through Lowpass Gates, some are going through enveloped VCAs, and various modulation is being applied to wavetables and FM sources. The conga-like sounds are the two z3000s, FM-d by a modulated AFG.

I start off with the INITIAL knob set to about 2 o'clock, producing a nice rhythm over all the outputs. A reset is being sent to the V-Gates every 4 bars. Gradually I turn down the INITIAL knob, until the V-Gates is merely pinging off simple binary divisions of the clock. Then, gradually I bring the rhythm back in again (this is created by the outputs starting to follow the clock's pulsing when they are active)

This could be made even more fun by adding random resets here and there.
