about

For this demo I wanted to do a very clear and uncluttered demonstration of the effect of the VCA's Input Level drive at various different Resonance settings, with a sweep through most of the frequency range. It adds a pleasing warmth and fullness to the sound of the filter, and also glues the resonance to the source sound nicely, especially at higher resonance settings.

PATCH DETAILS:

The sound source is the Intellijel Rubicon, with a mix of Double-Frequency Sigmoid, Saw and -1 Sub. A repeated filter sweep over 4 bars is produced by Silent Way, with additional modulation coming from the Tiptop z4000, which is adding a slight envelope to the cutoff on each note. The VCA on the Raging Bull was set to "ON".

There are seven 4-bar filter sweeps in each recording, with a short gap between them. For each new recording the Resonance was increased, to demonstrate the various interactions between the Input Level and the Resonance. There are six different Resonance settings used, from minimum to just below the point at which it starts self-oscillating very loudly.

The last recording is slightly different: As the self-oscillation is so loud, it was overpowering the waves I was feeding into it - so I cranked them all to full on the mixer to demonstrate the most intense Resonance setting you can get, without losing the source material's clarity. Eight filter sweeps are then applied, and each time the intensity of the sweep is increased to give a clear idea of how the filter responds at maximum Resonance, over the entire frequency range. The sweeps also start from a lower cutoff frequency.
