EHX Memory Boy Deluxe CV Modulation

about

This is a demo of the EHX Memory Boy Deluxe's delay time being modulated via its Expression Pedal Input. Other parameters can also be modulated in this way (Feedback, Internal Modulation Rate/ Amount)

The patch was as follows:

Doepfer a149-1 random voltages multed to the pitch of the z3000 saw wave, and also to ch. 3 of Maths (attenuated down to about 2 o'clock initially, although this goes up as high as 4 o'clock at some points - the EHX only wants voltages within 0v-3v range, so attenuation is necessary or you will lose a lot of the "swing" of your voltage changes) .

The expression Pedal input on the EHX is set to control delay time.

I jam on it, fading between DRY, to a mix of DRY/WET and completely WET at various points. I'm also changing the base delay time on the EHX, as well as changing how much Maths is attenuating the 149-1 random voltages going into it.

At some point I switch to using a cycling envelope from Maths as the CV source to the EHX instead, and then i switch to using one of the random gate outs of the a149-2 to trigger the Maths env (and also turn the cycle off, so that every now and then it just BOINGS the delay time up and down)

Things get pretty silly at points, where i let it scream with feedback and CV it to oblivion with the cycling Maths env, until it becomes an oscillator that is wiggling up and down. At this point i fade the DRY signal back in again just to remind us what we started with!!

It's basically pretty damn cool, once you've got your head round how it works with voltages:

1 - you need attenuation on them going in if they are high.
2 - it only wants positive voltages.
3 - as soon as you plug a cable into the Expression pedal input, the delay time goes faster (with Zero voltage coming into it)
4 - if you send it 3v it will go back to the delay time it was at before you put the cable in - so it basically goes from FASTER at 0v to the original speed at 3v
5 - so - if you put the delay time on the EHX right at its fastest setting, it will do nothing when fed 3v. it is FINE to put it right to the other end of the knob though

phew....that took a while to explain. it's fine once you get the hang of it though!

Hope this helps other folk make decisions on CV-able delays - it's a tough nut to crack!
