about

Whilst trying to downsize my Eurorack system a little I embarked on a filter shootout, and ended up recording the results.

The sound source is just a simple AFG tone (saw sub and pulse) into each filter in turn, with six sweeps through the frequency range with increasing resonance.

I have used a 24db (4 pole) LPF wherever possible, but it was impossible to match all the filters by mode, as some don't have 24db and some don't have 12db.

I have matched the cutoff as much as i can, and the range of the sweep.

I have also tried to get MOST of the different tones of resonance in - up to just before self-oscillation (if the filter does this). this is because self-osc tends to completely take over the sound otherwise, and jumps out at ridiculous volume...making for a fatiguing listen when comparing. All recordings have been normalised, but there may be differences in perceived volume due to peaks when at high resonance.

I have also tried to set each filter for pretty much its cleanest setting (some have input gain which drives the filter into a more overdriven tone - this is featured in the other set of recordings: "Lowpass FIlter Shootout (extended tweaking)"
